Kale (Ethiopian) Amara is a quick and easy-to-grow green that is perfect for both garden beds and containers. This variety of kale is known for its tender leaves that are a deep green colour and have a slightly curled appearance. The baby leaves can be used raw in salads and the larger leaves cooked as "greens." Kale is an excellent source of vitamins C and A, making it a nutritious addition to any meal. This variety is also known as "Texsel Greens" and is a popular choice for gardeners who want to add both flavour and nutrition to their garden.
Sowing instructions:
Sow indoors - 0.5cm (1/4") deep, in trays of compost. Keep warm and moist, a temperature of approx. 15C (60F) is ideal. Transplant 5cm (2") apart to other trays when large enough to handle.
Gradually accustom young plants to outside conditions (avoid frosts), before planting out 45cm (18") apart. Harvest mature plants from September to March.
Sow outdoors - sow thinly in a seed bed, 1.5cm (1/2") deep directly into finely prepared, moist soil. Allow 45cm (18") between rows. Seedlings usually appear in 14-28 days.
Thin to 45cm (18") apart. No thinning is necessary if only baby leaves are required. Keep moist.
Regular sowings made every two to three weeks will ensure a continuous supply. Harvest baby leaves from June.
Sow outdoors until June for mature plants to harvest from Sept to March, sow until September and pick as required for baby leaf. Sow indoors for mature plants only.
